English Essay
Required to find and discuss a paradigm shift, I write about the recent trend in college football "fandom." At one time, the average fan's primary preference was to physically attend a college football game. Within the last decade however, college football teams have witnessed a drastic decline in attendance. In this essay, I challenge the definition of a fan: Are you less of a fan if you decide to stay home? At the same time, I apply the sociological theory of "McDonaldization" to explain why this trend has occurred and why it makes sense. Essentially, "McDonaldization" asserts that people want society to mimic the tenants of the fast food industry: quickness and efficiency. Personally, I feel that this paper highlights my strengths in critical thinking and succinctness. In an organized fashion, I identify the trend, explain the mechanism for its occurrence, and reference an outside theory to make an educated conjecture. I also incorporate a plethora of quotes and parenthetical citations to give credence to my thesis; thus, I show proficiency in conducting a proper research study. In relation to this paper, I gave a prepared speech, or "Ted Talk" on this subject. You can find my speech under the "Projects" tab.
